The 106th China Import and Export Fair (Canton Fair) held promotion events on August 14 in New York.

Mr. Keyu Peng, Consul General of the Consulate General of China in New York, addressed the event. He reviewed the rapid development of Canton Fair in the past half century and highly praised the promotion of China-US economic relationship by Canton Fair. Although the momentum of rapid development of bilateral trade relationship was interrupted by the current global economic and financial crisis, the first China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue (SAED) marked a successful step in reinvigorating bilateral trade and economic relationship. The governments of the two countries reaffirmed the commitment to take measures to promote balanced and sustainable economic growth, ensuring more open trade and investment and fighting protectionism, and working toward China's Market Economy Status in an expeditious manner. China Import and Export Fair has already proven and will continue to be, a valuable platform for this purpose. The small-medium enterprises and the agencies from commercial and trade industries in the both countries will be more accessible to the international market and business opportunities through the platform.

Mr. Zhiping Wang, the Deputy Director of China Import and Export Fair addressed that since the Chinese government adopted a series of policies for stabilizing foreign trade, a huge amount of business opportunities have become available for foreign companies, including the U.S. businessman. While Canton Fair continues to be the most valuable platform in China for domestic and foreign enterprises to promote themselves, more convenience will be provided for international purchasers and exhibitors in the coming future. The 106th Canton Fair will be held in Guangzhou between October 15 and November 4 2009 for three sessions. It is estimated that over 20000 enterprises will attend the fair and 150000 commodities will be exhibited then. Mr. Zhiping Wang warmly welcomed the participation of American enterprises to visit the fair, make exhibition or purchasing in the fair. He sincerely thanked the great support from the U.S. government, industrial and commercial organizations and enterprises. At the end of the event, Mr. Wang was interviewed by a number of local media about Canton Fair.

Mr. Li Xiaojing, President of China General Chamber of Commerce-USA and General Manager of Bank of China (U.S.A.), Ms. Mammas, USEAC Director in New York of the U.S. Department of Commerce, Ms. Jackson, the Managing Director in the Division of International Business in the Office of the Mayor of the New York City, Mr. Natapoff, Senior Vice President of Empire State Development Corporation, Mr. Jaffe, President of the Greater New York Chamber of Commerce also addressed the event.
